Logitech C920 Webcam Review

The Logitech C920 webcam was launched in 2009 as the pinnacle of Logitech’s time-lapse series of webcams and helped to bring high-definition video communications to the masses. To this day it remains one of the most popular webcams in terms of sales, which has led us to ask ourselves just why is this the case? Let’s dig deeper into why the Logitech C920 might be a must-have in your business.

Logitech is a major player in the PC peripheral market, having produced peripherals for personal computers since 1981. One of the company’s longest-running models is the C920 webcam, which was released back in 2012 for $99 (around £70, AU$130) and has been offered across several iterations over the years. The varying price points are due to fluctuations in exchange rates, as well as the availability of stock around the world.

Price

Logitech’s newest entry into the webcam niche lives up to its parent company’s reputation for excellent peripherals in both build and image quality. Luckily for us, the C920 outperforms both previous generations. With a price tag of $79.99 / £89.99 / AU$145, it is still expensive, but upon closer inspection and testing against its peers, there is only one reason to choose a more expensive webcam: the prospective distance from your computer and the type of intended content filmed.

The C920 could mark the beginning of that change of fortune. It’s cheaper than its direct competitor, Microsoft’s LifeCam Studio, and is capable of providing higher quality video footage during your video discussions, which is likely to be one of the most important factors when you’re choosing a new webcam.

Design and Features

Logitech C920 is a game-changing webcam that supports full HD 1080p video calling and recording, together with amazing image quality. However, the design isn’t original, although it has been refreshed for the new version. This C920 may not have a constructed lens glass such as the C920s, although if this is something you desire on a camera, you can easily get one online (informally, since they’re not offered by Logitech).

It’s doubtful that you’ll find a webcam with more to offer than the Logitech c920. Whether you’re representing your business, streaming sessions of your favorite game, or broadcasting online classes, this modern HD webcam is easy to set up and just as easy to use.

With a 38 mm lens in-built, you can make video calls in widescreen ultra-HD for those that like things in a larger size. If you want to hang the c920 overhead so it records whatever action happens beneath it – perhaps your child doing their homework or your cat knocking something over – then the built-in claw-style grip will easily fit onto most laptop screens and PC monitors.

For a webcam that’s capable of full 1080p video recording, the Logitech c920 sits just below $100, which is very reasonable pricing in my opinion. Those who would like to purchase the c920 will have the option of going either wired or wireless with their connections. This can be greatly useful if you are using your webcam with a laptop and don’t want to be too strung out on wires.

Perfomance

The Logitech C920 HD Pro Webcam is a plug-and-play USB device, there’s very little fuss involved with setting it up. Just plug it in and it’s good to go. There are no drivers that need to be installed or updated and it works on Windows (7 or later), Apple macOS 10.0 onwards, and Google Chrome OS, giving you some flexibility regarding your devices and operating systems.

Overall, the Logitech c920 is a very well-built camera that can grab 1080p videos and snapshots at a stunning level of quality. It’s pretty much plug-and-play with any computer where you will be able to take advantage of its great quality right out of the box and unless you are working on something super specific, there is no reason why one should not get this camera.

While it can’t record in HDR, it’s just fine at HD without it. In fact, there are a number of advantages that come with its cost-conscious price tag including zero technology headaches for capturing smooth frame rates at up to 60 FPS. It proudly sports a 1080p sensor with a max resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, but can also be made to shoot video at 4K through software called Logitech Webcam Controller.

With the Microsoft LifeCam Cinema, Logitech C920, Logitech Brio, and Rylo all bringing color to our collection of test webcams, it’s time to take a look at how these four videos conferencing cams compare on video quality alone. The Logitech 920 will likely be sitting nicely on your desk next to your monitor and your two favorite mice.

Logitech’s C920 webcam is a great little piece of kit that’s exceptional at doing what it does. The 1080p high-definition lens is accompanied by autofocus and integrated dual stereo mics to provide quality webcams for both laptop users and for desktops.

This camera has light detection that is more advanced than others, helping to keep the recording subject in focus with minimal noise in low-light environments. The audio quality is acceptable, but the microphone pickup pattern will most likely leave you shouting at your computer because it’s not picking up any other sound in a room at all.
